Duplicate Hands

Duplicate hands is a technique to reduce variance, proposed by Darse Billings and first applied by Univrsity of Alberta Computer Poker Research Group in the annual AAAI Computer Poker competition.

"The duplicate hands method involves dealing each hand twice with the seats reversed in the second instance, the idea being that each player gets to experience the same opportunities as their opponent. Clearly this method requires that each player has no memory of the first hand when playing the second of the duplicate hands. This is easy in the case of non-human players since memory can be simply switched in and out or even reset if necessary. In the case of human players it's obviously not possible to perform the duplicate hands with only one human player. The only viable solution is to use two human players, ideally similar in style of play and skill level." [1]
